Film Industry Meetup planned for July 13
Written by Alexandyr Kent July, 09 2010 4:00 PM
The Robinson Film Center will host a free Film Industry Meetup 6 p.m. July 13, 2010. Film industry professionals and aspiring professionals are invited to attend this bi-monthly meeting to share information about the latest opportunities in local film industry.
The Meetup is a partnership between the Robinson Film Center and the Shreveport-Bossier Film Office.
At the July meetup, Fairfield Studios will talk about the new Shreveport-Bossier Best Screenplay Competition and discuss promotional trailers paying homage to movies like “The Spirit,” “Pulp Fiction” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou.”
The contest’s goal is to showcase local talent.
“We know it’s really hard for somebody to get started in the movie business,” said Clint McCommon, manager of Fairfield Studios. “It takes a lot of resources. Luckily we have a lot of those in our studio, so we can provide those and provide our services to the community.”
The screenplay contest aims to find the best screenplay in the region and shine a light on the talent in the local film industry. Contest judges include Jeffrey Goodman, director of “The Last Lullaby”; Gregory Kallenberg, writer/director of “Haynesville”; and Emmy-winning actor Pruitt Taylor Vince, who will direct the winning screenplay.
Contestants can submit their original screenplays through August 31. Details can be found at the website, sbshortfilms.net. On the site, the public can also cast votes for their favorite work.
Contestants must live within the Shreveport-Bossier City area; the screenplay must represent Shreveport-Bossier in a positive manner.
For more information about the screenplay, please contact Clint McCommon, manager of Fairfield Studios, at (318) 220-0400.
Additional guests of this month’s meetup include:
- Arlena Acree, director of film, media and entertainment from the City of Shreveport.
- Chris Lyon, organizer of the the Shreveport Indie Film Alliance. The local group aims to unite voices and resources of the local independent film community.
The Big Picture: Shreveport Indie Film Alliance, screenwriter Tim Miller
Written by Alexandyr Kent July, 09 2010 3:32 PM
Today's Big Picture profiles Tim Miller, a screenwriter from Bossier City, and touches on the Shreveport Indie Film Alliance (find them on Facebook). The script is below. Find the mp3 here. Podcast here (iTunes).
The Big Picture airs Fridays at 4:32 p.m. on Red River Radio, 89.9 FM.
ALEXANDYR KENT: Good afternoon, and welcome to the Big Picture. I’m Alexandyr Kent from the Robinson Film Center. Earlier this week, I wandered into the downtown offices of CoHabitat Shreveport. Chris Lyon, leader of the newly formed Shreveport Indie Film Alliance, was talking about ways to bring local filmmakers together.
CHRIS LYON (in meeting): We have so many people, and some that couldn’t make it tonight, that have a ton of equipment, or they have great ideas, or they are great screenwriters.
KENT: And sitting attentively in the corner of that meeting was a screenwriter. His name is Tim Miller. He lives in Bossier City. And he writes screenplays because he, like people gathered at that meeting, believes in the collaborative art of filmmaking.
TIM MILLER: To have someone come in and say, you’ve got a script here we can interpret it this way … we can look at it this way … there are all these different ways. They can take it further and build on that, and people can come together in a creative effort. That’s very special to me.
KENT: As the lore goes, getting a producer or director to pay attention to your script is no easy feat. Of course, the script’s got to be good. But the writer also has to have good timing. Better timing, it turns out, than Miller chose for moving to Hollywood a few years ago. Just after arriving there, the writers’ strike started in November 2007. That timing didn’t feel good at all.
MILLER: [It was] really, really depressing, for everybody I think, but certainly for me. I got a couple of meetings while I was there that where strictly get to know you meetings because you couldn’t talk about a script. But it was an interesting time.
KENT: What proved more interesting, though, was Miller’s next move, to Bossier City. The Film Institute at Bossier Parish Community College decided to turn his script, “At War with the Ants,” into a movie. And now filmmakers in New Orleans are busy transforming another called “Scanned” into a short film. These are positive steps forward, and reassurance that local voices can strengthen the local film community.
MILLER: And now here … I think there is a lot going on here. I think there is a lot to work with, and a lot of people to work with, that really want to make something special. As I’ve discussed with you before, if we work on it, this [northwest Louisiana] can become a film center and not have to depend on Hollywood largesse.
KENT: If you want more information about the Shreveport Indie Film Alliance and efforts to bolster local talent, search for the group on Facebook. I’m Alexandyr Kent for the Big Picture.

The Board of Directors of The Robinson Film Center in Shreveport has announced the selection of Neal Lemlein of Boulder, Colo. to serve as Executive Director of the not-for-profit arts organization. Lemlein’s appointment concludes a national search, which has been underway since the departure of previous Executive Director Pierre Rubben in December 2009. Lemlein officially assumes responsibilities on July 20, but is currently actively collaborating with Interim Executive Director Lisa Babin during this transitional period.“As a great admirer of The Robinson Film Center, I am particularly excited about how its impact, as a dynamic cultural center celebrating film as a vital art form, will continue to grow locally, regionally, and nationally,” Lemlein said. “I am delighted to be joining the team to help further that process.”
Neal Lemlein has had an extensive film marketing and management career and has worked on over 125 media-marketing campaigns. He began as an executive with the advertising agency Doyle Dane Bernbach, where his first project was Star Wars. As Senior Vice President of Marketing and Media Services at Twentieth Century Fox he was responsible for the development and execution of all of the studio’s theatrical media-marketing campaigns. Signed by advertising agency D’arcy Masius Benton and Bowles to found the agency’s entertainment division, he brought Paramount Pictures and NBC Television into the fold, generating billings of more than $100 million in less than 12 months. As Executive Vice President of Universal Studios Hollywood, he led six departments and a team of 75 employees in revitalizing the theme park’s image, growing its market share in the face of fierce competition. In the cable television field, he headed production and programming, as well as marketing, for the New York Times’ innovative “Popcorn Channel” joint venture.
Most recently, he has served as President of Around the Bend Media, Inc., a firm working to bring exceptional film, television, and new media properties to the screen. Neal has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 1989. The Big Picture: Screenwriters, start your engines
Written by Alexandyr Kent July, 02 2010 10:11 AM
We're partnering with Fairfield Studios to support their Shreveport-Bossier Best Screenplay Competition. Entries will be accepted between July 5 and Labor Day. Check out www.sbshortfilms.net for updates. This week's Forum also had a good piece about the contest.
To help spread the word, we are hosting a film industry meetup 6 p.m. July 13 at the Robinson Film Center. Fairfield will outline the contest and share some of its promotional trailers -- which are pretty wild.
Also at the July 13 meeting, the Shreveport Independent Filmmakers Alliance will tell us about their efforts to bolster the local indie scene.
Below is the script for today's Big Picture, which focuses on the screenplay contest. The Big Pictures airs Fridays at 4:32 p.m. on Red River Radio.
Subscribe to the podcast here.
ALEXANDYR KENT: Good afternoon, and welcome to the Big Picture. I’m Alexandyr Kent from the Robinson Film Center. Local screenwriters, get to work. You have until Labor Day to submit your best short film script to the Shreveport-Bossier Best Screenplay Competition.
CLINT MCCOMMON: Basically it’s a competition to find the best screenplay in the Shreveport-Bossier area. And we’re going to take the winning screenplay and turn it into a short film for the winner.
KENT: That’s Clint McCommon, manager of Fairfield Studios in Shreveport. The multimedia production company is offering the competition in hopes of finding a bright, new, local storyteller – an aspiring filmmaker -- who doesn’t call an elsewhere home. Now if you think a short film screenplay contest sounds small-time, take a listen to their first promotional trailer.
CLIP FROM PROMOTIONAL TRAILER (VOICE): I know it’s out there, here in my city. Somewhere in Shreveport-Bossier, there’s a screenplay waiting to be discovered. Nothing hides from me in my city.
KENT: As you can hear, the Shreveport-Bossier Best Screenplay Competition is dreaming big – at least in terms of production value. For this promo, Fairfield Studios did a green-screen shot, where man donning a trench coat stands in front of a massive nighttime skyline. That skyline background exists only in a computer at Fairfield Studios, by the way.
MCCOMMON: We know it’s really hard for somebody to get started in the movie business. And it takes a lot of resources. Luckily we have a lot of those in our studio, so we can provide those and provide our services to the community in the best way. And that’s where we best fit.
KENT: As a major bonus, Emmy-winning actor Pruitt Taylor Vince has agreed to direct the winning screenplay. The remaining intangible, however, is just what kind of story – supernatural thriller, action, adventure or slow-paced drama – will rise to the top. Fairfield Studio’s Joey Barto doesn’t have a clue what will win, and that’s part of the fun.
JOEY BARTO: You know there is a lot of people who want to write and have all these ideas, and I guess this gives them an outlet, locally, as far as what they want to do. I’m kind of curious to see what kind of turnout we’ll get. (Joey Barto)
KENT: The Shreveport-Bossier Best Screenplay will be open for submissions July 5 until Labor Day. On July 13 at the Robinson Film Center in downtown Shreveport, the contest sponsors will gather to discuss the project. For more information, log on to robinsonfilmcenter.org and click on the blog link. I’m Alexandyr Kent for the Big Picture.
William Joyce talks 'Metropolis,' opening June 18
Written by Alexandyr Kent June, 11 2010 2:45 PM
Author, illustrator and moviemaker William Joyce loves a mad genius. And on June 18 at 8 p.m., he'll get a chance to publicly celebrate Fritz Lang by introducing the restored version of "Metropolis." Joyce's Moonbot Studios is sponsoring a weeklong run of the classic (June 18-24).
For the Big Picture, I spoke to Joyce about the significance of the 1927 sci-fi masterwork.
It's not hard to see how the visual landscape of "Metropolis" underlies futurescapes seen in Joyce's "Robots" (2005) and "Meet the Robinsons" (2007). "Metropolis" has also influenced countless other moviemakers who admire Lang's Expressionist masterpieces.
"There are certain movies that sort of create the language of film," Joyce said. "And it is an ever-changing language. And 'Metropolis' is one that gave us so much of what is the DNA and alphabet of movies now. There had been epics before 'Metropolis,' but there had never been a science fiction epic."
Joyce also noted that Lang also pioneered the spy movie ("Spies," 1928), the psychological thriller ("M," 1931), and even the fantasy epic ("Die Nibelugen," 1924).
You can tune into our conversation at 4:32 p.m. today on Red River Radio. Or you can download the mp3 here, or subscribe to the iTunes podcast here.

Scott Crompton, Blade Studios aim to buoy music industry
Written by Alexandyr Kent May, 28 2010 2:24 PM
Scott Crompton, executive producer at Blade Studios, is today's featured guest on The Big Picture. The new music production studio plans to open in the fall. It will be able to produce traditional music albums, and help the film industry with some of its postproduction/ADR needs.
The prospect of opening a new music studio in Shreveport jazzes Crompton, and he believes that Blade Studios will play a key role in rebuilding Shreveport's music industry. It seems his office phone has been ringing off the hook with local talent eager to contribute to the project.
"What we’re going to do is tap into the Shreveport inertia, give it a little nudge, and it’s really going to take off," Crompton said. "I’m convinced that if you can get film people to come here [and enjoy it], then we have a real leg up on the music side."
Blade Studios is currently under construction, and will be located inside the Biospace 1 building at the Intertech Science Park in Shreveport.
The Big Picture, a weekly radio series, airs at 4:32 p.m. on Red River Radio (89.9 FM in Shreveport). You can subscribe to the weekly iTunes podcast here.

'Candy Lady,' 'Table Manners' set for next Regional Filmmakers Spotlight
Written by Alexandyr Kent May, 14 2010 5:06 PM
We're celebrating two locally produced films on May 20: "Candy Lady" and "Table Manners: The Horror Comedy that Sings!" I covered each for two recent episodes of The Big Picture, my weekly series for Red River Radio. Subscribe to the iTunes podcast by clicking here.
The screening will begin at 7:30. "Candy Lady" is up first and will be followed by Q&A with director Travis Dent. At 8:15, we will reseat for "Table Manners," and follow it with another Q&A. (We will separately ticket each screening to make certain we have enough seats. We're expecting a big house, so arrive early!)
Below are the scripts for those radio stories.
SCRIPT FOR THE BIG PICTURE: TRAVIS DENT ON "CANDY LADY" (May 14 episode)
DENT: I grew up in Georgia. A little small town called Lincolnton, Georgia, which is right outside of Augusta, Georgia. ... You know, we had like two stop signs in town, very small place, and I was looking for an area around here that was similar to that, and we found a little neighborhood on Lakeshore Drive that was perfect for this piece.
In both subject matter and location, he hopes “Candy Lady” reflects a slower pace of life with which a local audience might identify. Here’s a clip from the movie, which focuses on an over-the-fence conflict between neighbors.
CLIP FROM "CANDY LADY": Candy Lady: Well, baby, what you want?
Girl: Two Blowpops, and two pack of [not transcribed]. And my daddy says to bring Newports.
Candy Lady: Your daddy says send him some Newports? Tell your daddy if he ain’t got enough breath to walk over here and come get 'em himself, he don’t need to smoke.
Like many filmmakers in the Shreveport community, Dent was fortunate to find actors eager to work on his short – even without pay – just to gain experience in front of the camera.
DENT: You know, we just got a great response. There are a lot of talented people here, who want the opportunity to have lead roles and speaking roles for their demo reels, for bigger projects. It’s not difficult to find the talent and the people with the ambition to complete your short films.
Dent moved to Shreveport three years ago, and the buzzing film industry inspired him to begin producing shorts on a smaller scale. Technological advances, he said, have given him opportunities that he simply didn’t have ten years ago.
DENT: Filmmakers could use the excuse that, well the technology isn’t there, and it doesn’t look good, doesn’t sound good. But in today’s age, with advances in technology, the HD cameras, there is really no excuse. You can make top-quality stuff on a microbudget.
“Candy Lady” contains language and suggests violence. The short will be screened freely May 20 at the Robinson Film Center as part of the Regional Filmmakers Spotlight. Dent is excited see an audience respond to his work.
DENT: I can’t say that I’m nervous. I just hope that it’s something that people will walk away from and think about it later. And that they just won’t see the film, and the next day, they won’t speak about it. I want it to be an ongoing experience for them. I want them to go home to discuss it, and talk about it. If that happens, then I’ve been successful.

SCRIPT FOR THE BIG PICTURE: MINDY BLEDSOE ON "TABLE MANNERS" (APRIL 30 episode)
Good afternoon, and welcome to the Big Picture. I’m Alexandyr Kent from the Robinson Film Center. In the world of independent filmmaking, producing your own idea can be a big gamble. Fortunately for Mindy Bledsoe, she bet on a bloody good one.
BLEDSOE: Table manners the horror comedy that sings is a short about a cannibalistic family that seduces people into marriage and then eats them. But they don’t kill them. They just like to eat them and let their bodies heal. ... It is a horror movie slash comedy slash musical.
It features romance. It features a blood. Guts. Marriage. And lots and lots of dementedly deranged singing by a shiny, happy wedding party that have a rather taboo menu in store. We’ll let the movie speak for itself, here:
CLIP FROM "TABLE MANNERS" (singing): Stop your screaming you’re numbed up real good, it’s not going to hurt like you think it would.
It’s devilish little moments like these that bring a sparkle to Bledsoe’s eyes.
BLEDSOE: I am a huge, huge musical fan. I grew up with musicals. It’s the first thing I remember watching. My mother and I would sing musicals all over the house. It’s a big part of my life. For some reason I also started watching horror movies when I was five. My first one was “Children of the Corn.” So I love horror movies.
Bledsoe produced this 22-minute musical with a big creative team, including corwriter cinematographer and editor Rob Senska, and composer and all-around audio man Kevin Jones. All three hail from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. The movie’s soundtrack was recorded on the campus, but the footage was shot in Shreveport and features a bevy of film and theater talent. Bledsoe appreciates their camaraderie.
BLEDSOE: Yes, they are also sick-minded, and they also love anything that is weird. It’s the youth of today, I reckon. I think they were all a bit worried about the whole singing part because none of our actors are singers. … We had to reassure them that this is B-movie awesome. It's a world where everybody sings. And I think we should always live in that world. So when you don’t have a great singing voice, you still got to let it out.
Perhaps the most miraculous this about "Table Manners" is that is was produced so efficiently: costing just blood, sweat, tears, lunch, and gas money.
BLEDSOE: You always want more money. You always don’t want to have those restrictions because you think you are going to get a better project. At the same time, you always have your back up against the wall. All this creativeness come out of you. When you are forced to do something, and you have promised to get something done, you will be amazed at what comes out of you.
"Table Manners" will be screened May 20 at the Robinson film Center as part of its free Regional Filmmaker Spotlight Series. If you’re interested, be advised: it contains language, fake blood, nasty looking meat, and a cast loving every minute of it. I’m Alexandyr Kent for the Big Picture.

Mmm, meat ... Wade Marshall unveils gems at Studio Ops
Written by Alexandyr Kent April, 16 2010 10:27 AM

Wade Marshall, manager of Studio Operations' prop house, is my kind of interview. He offered a frankly brilliant story for today's Big Picture, a weekly series airing on Red River Radio.
Personality? Check.
Eyebrow-raising insight? Check.
Sordid details revealed with a mischievous grin? Check.
Studio Ops' prop house is three years old and holds some 40- to 50,000 objects: lamps, tables, fake slabs of meat, plastic cactus, law books, fake money inscribed with the warning "for motion picture use only," foam flashlights, bullet hole-riddled cars, and a wardrobe room that would make a thrift-store junkie drool.
The majority of these props and sets come from movies made by Nu Image/Millennium Films, which has produced 10 features in Shreveport. (Studio Ops is the locally based division of Nu Image/Millennium.)
Inside the storage depot, you'll also find props from projects produced by other companies like "The Mist" (Weinstein Co., Louisiana Production Consultants) and "The Great Debaters" (Weinstein). Everything inside is available for rental.
Tune in to Red River Radio today at 4:32 p.m. for a funny and informative story.
Podcast lovers can subscribe through iTunes by clicking here.
Perhaps the coolest thing I learned, however, wasn't about the prop house. Marshall is a composer who has some interesting credits to his name: videogames, TV shows and even a priceless dance song written for his wife's birthday ("Tall Chick"). Check out his website at www.wademarshall.com. You can also friend his composer page on Facebook by searching for "Wade Marshall composer."
