Movie Information

When a successful British ghost writer (Ewan McGregor) agrees to complete the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister (Pierce Brosnan), his agent assures him it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. But the project seems doomed from the start—not least because his predecessor on the project, Prime Minister Lang’s long-term aide, died in an unfortunate accident.  As The Ghost works, he begins to uncover clues suggesting his predecessor may have stumbled on a dark secret linking Lang to the CIA—and that somehow this information is hidden in the manuscript he left behind. Was Lang in the service of the American intelligence agency while he was prime minister? And was The Ghost’s predecessor murdered because of the appalling truth he uncovered?

Resonating with topical themes, this atmospheric and suspenseful political thriller is a story of deceit and betrayal on every level— sexual, political and literary. In a world in which nothing, and no one, is as it seems, The Ghost quickly discovers that the past can be deadly—and that history is decided by whoever stays alive to write it.

Reviews

"This is the 76-year-old Polanski's first contemporary thriller in two decades and his first film in four years. It's an intelligent and deftly honed return to the genre, blending a contemporary plot and classic structure."
-Claudia Puig, USA Today

"A dark pearl of a movie whose great flair and precision make it Polanski's best work in quite a while."

Movie Information

This screening will be presented from the Criterion Collection's archival 35mm film print.

Director Wes Anderson's follow-up to the acclaimed Bottle Rocket is a funny, warmhearted, and extremely sharp American response to the English "Angry Young Man" films of the 1960s, right down to its British Invasion soundtrack. Jason Schwartzman creates a classic protagonist in Max Fischer, a sophomore at Rushmore Academy. He excels at every extracurricular activity in school, from theater to beekeeping. Gradewise, however, he's failing. He has few friends outside school save for wealthy but depressed industrialist Herman Blume (Bill Murray), father of obnoxious twin boys who also attend Rushmore. Enter Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams), a beautiful young widowed teacher at Rushmore Elementary. While Max is immediately smitten with Miss Cross, she finds comfort in the company of the emotionally frazzled Blume. But Max won't let Blume have Miss Cross without a fight.  Easily one of the finest comedies since The Graduate, Rushmore is a monument to brilliant filmmaking.

"Bonus Features"

Come dressed in Rushmore Academy attire (either prep school OR extra-curriular activity attire) and we'll take a "Class Photo" before the film with everyone who comes in costume.

Arrive early to see a hilarious pre-show beginning around 9:30 PM each night, created by RFC staffers Evan Falbaum and Keith Shively.

Movie Information

At age 18, Malik El Djebena (Tahar Rahim) is just beginning a six-year prison sentence. Though he cannot read or write, Malik soon figures out the politics of the prison system, giving him a prime spot in the power struggle between two battling groups of prisoners. A Prophet took home the Grand Prix at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, and went on to be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film by both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.  Not your typical awards-season foreign language film, this gritty, edge-of-your-seat crime noir has critics raving and has drawn more than one comparison to The Godfather.

-Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

Features the voices of Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter, In Bruges), Mick Lally, Evan McGuire and Christen Mooney.

Young Brendan lives in a remote medieval outpost under siege from barbarian raids. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the fairy Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarians closing in, will Brendan's determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against evil?

The Robinson Film Center is proud to be one of only a select few theaters to screen this beautiful, all-ages appropriate film in the United States.

Movie Information

Set in the backwoods of Louisiana, Haynesville follows the historic discovery of the United States' largest natural gas field (a formation called the Haynesville Shale).  The documentary examines the affect of the energy boom on three lives caught in the middle of fervor: A single mom takes up the defense of her community’s environmental protections, an African American preacher attempts to use the riches to build a Christian school and a salt-of-the-earth, self-described “country boy” finds himself conflicted as he weighs losing his land to an oil company’s offer to make him a millionaire.  While tracking these lives, Haynesville also takes a hard look at the current energy picture and what the Haynesville Shale could possibly mean for a cleaner and more green energy future.

Special Guests
Filmmaker Gregory Kallenberg and the creative team behind Haynesville have announced plans to personally attend as many screenings as possible during this engagement, participating in Q&A's and selling DVDs and merchandise.  Watch this space for more details as they become available.
