Special Screening March 9 with Rick Dial:
Actor Rick Dial, who plays "Wesley Barnes," the keyboardist in Bad Blake's band in the film Crazy Heart, will join us for a Q&A following the 7:30 PM screening on Tuesday, March 9.  Normal ticket prices apply.

Four-time Academy Award® nominee Jeff Bridges stars as the richly comic, semi-tragic romantic anti-hero Bad Blake in the debut feature film Crazy Heart from writer-director Scott Cooper. Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (Golden Globe® Nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal), a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician. As he struggles down the road of redemption, Bad learns the hard way just how tough life can be on one man’s crazy heart.

Critically-acclaimed lead performances (including Bridges' Golden Globe-winning portrayal of Blake) and songs (the original music for the film, composed by T-Bone Burnett, also won a Golden Globe) make this one of the most talked-about independent films of the year.

Reviews

"It’s one of the year’s best, most deeply felt films."
-Kyle Smith, New York Post

"Jeff Bridges' character may be called Bad Blake, but his performance is incredibly good, perhaps the best of his career."
-Claudia Puig, USA Today

"Hand the Oscar to Jeff Bridges right now."
-Stephen Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer

Movie Information

After almost fifty years of marriage, the Countess Sofya, Leo Tolstoy’s devoted wife, passionate lover, muse and secretary—she’s copied out War and Peace six times…by hand—suddenly finds her entire world turned upside down. In the name of his newly created religion, the great Russian novelist has renounced his noble title, his property and even his family in favor of poverty, vegetarianism and even celibacy. After she’s born him thirteen children! When Sofya then discovers that Tolstoy’s trusted disciple, Chertkov —whom she despises—may have secretly convinced her husband to sign a new will, leaving the rights to his iconic novels to the Russian people rather than his very own family, she is consumed by righteous outrage. This is the last straw. Using every bit of cunning, every trick of seduction in her considerable arsenal, she fights fiercely for what she believes is rightfully hers.

Reviews

"The arrival of a movie with as much intelligence and artistry as The Last Station should also be accompanied by the sound of trumpets."
-Rex Reed, New York Observer

"Every second Helen Mirren is on-screen in The Last Station is a study in peerless talent."
-Claudia Puig, USA Today

"Helen Mirren is a lusty, roaring wonder playing, of all things, the long-suffering wife of Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer in peak form)."
-Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

For more than 50 years, he has been Italy's most powerful, feared and enigmatic politician. And as Giulio Andreotti begins his seventh term as Prime Minister, he and his hardliner faction take control of a country reeling from the brazen murders of several high-level bankers, judges and journalists, as well as the kidnapping and assassination of former Prime Minister Aldo Moro. But as the Christian Democrat party crumbles in a nationwide bribery scandal, suspicion begins to fall on Andreotti himself as the center of a shocking conspiracy involving the Vatican, the Mafia and the secret neo-Fascist Masonic Lodge P2. In what is called “The Trial Of The Century,” Italy's legendary Senator for Life will stand accused of corruption, collusion and murder.

Movie Information

When a successful British ghost writer (Ewan McGregor) agrees to complete the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister (Pierce Brosnan), his agent assures him it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. But the project seems doomed from the start—not least because his predecessor on the project, Prime Minister Lang’s long-term aide, died in an unfortunate accident.  As The Ghost works, he begins to uncover clues suggesting his predecessor may have stumbled on a dark secret linking Lang to the CIA—and that somehow this information is hidden in the manuscript he left behind. Was Lang in the service of the American intelligence agency while he was prime minister? And was The Ghost’s predecessor murdered because of the appalling truth he uncovered?

Resonating with topical themes, this atmospheric and suspenseful political thriller is a story of deceit and betrayal on every level— sexual, political and literary. In a world in which nothing, and no one, is as it seems, The Ghost quickly discovers that the past can be deadly—and that history is decided by whoever stays alive to write it.

Movie Information

This screening will be presented from the Criterion Collection's archival 35mm film print.

Director Wes Anderson's follow-up to the acclaimed Bottle Rocket is a funny, warmhearted, and extremely sharp American response to the English "Angry Young Man" films of the 1960s, right down to its British Invasion soundtrack. Jason Schwartzman creates a classic protagonist in Max Fischer, a sophomore at Rushmore Academy. He excels at every extracurricular activity in school, from theater to beekeeping. Gradewise, however, he's failing. He has few friends outside school save for wealthy but depressed industrialist Herman Blume (Bill Murray), father of obnoxious twin boys who also attend Rushmore. Enter Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams), a beautiful young widowed teacher at Rushmore Elementary. While Max is immediately smitten with Miss Cross, she finds comfort in the company of the emotionally frazzled Blume. But Max won't let Blume have Miss Cross without a fight.  Easily one of the finest comedies since The Graduate, Rushmore is a monument to brilliant filmmaking.

"Bonus Features"

Come dressed in Rushmore Academy attire (either prep school OR extra-curriular activity attire) and we'll take a "Class Photo" before the film with everyone who comes in costume.

A Prophet took home the Grand Prix at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, and went on to be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film by both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.  Not your typical awards-season foreign language film, this gritty, edge-of-your-seat crime noir has critics raving and has drawn more than one comparison to The Godfather.

Features the voices of Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter, In Bruges), Mick Lally, Evan McGuire and Christen Mooney.

Young Brendan lives in a remote medieval outpost under siege from barbarian raids. Movie Information

Set in the backwoods of Louisiana, Haynesville follows the historic discovery of the United States' largest natural gas field (a formation called the Haynesville Shale).  The documentary examines the affect of the energy boom on three lives caught in the middle of fervor: A single mom takes up the defense of her community’s environmental protections, an African American preacher attempts to use the riches to build a Christian school and a salt-of-the-earth, self-described “country boy” finds himself conflicted as he weighs losing his land to an oil company’s offer to make him a millionaire.  While tracking these lives, Haynesville also takes a hard look at the current energy picture and what the Haynesville Shale could possibly mean for a cleaner and more green energy future.

Special Guests
Filmmaker Gregory Kallenberg and the creative team behind Haynesville have announced plans to personally attend as many screenings as possible during this engagement, participating in Q&A's and selling DVDs and merchandise.  Watch this space for more details as they become available.

About the Film

Silver Screenings, a monthly matinee and luncheon program for senior citizens hosted by The Robinson Film Center, presents Alfred Hitchcock's haunting tale of deception, Vertigo--a masterful exploration of fantasy and anxiety. The film ranks with Rear Window as one of the director's most closely studied films for its psychological complexity, while the obsession of its protagonist--John "Scottie" Ferguson (James Stewart)--can also be seen to parallel that of Hitchcock's own fascination with the icy-blonde leading lady he re-created at the center of so many of his films. Ferguson is a retired detective, his career ended by the onset of a paralyzing fear of heights. An old friend, the wealthy Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore), hires Ferguson to follow his wife (Kim Novak), whom, he explains, has grown obsessed with an ancestor of hers. The assignment, however, draws Ferguson out of his comfortable role as observer and into a complex web of intrigue, mingled with the detective's own fantasies and fears. Stewart gives an exceptional performance as the disintegrating detective, while Novak, who was left largely undirected by Hitchcock, conveys a subtle and powerful psychological journey.

Ticket Information

Admission to Silver Screenings is $5.75 for admission to the film, $14 for admission to the film as well as a seated luncheon afterwards.  Senior groups are welcome.  RSVP is required to attend the luncheon.  To RSVP or purchase tickets, call (318) 459-4122.
